Factual TV: Sub Genres - Mr Phillipson

Special Interest Documentary

This is traditional type of documentary which a would have a small target audience. They are usually a one off story that isn't followed up the next week and if it is, the topic would be completely different. A special interest documentary tends to hold appeal to a specific age group, interest or culture.

An example of special interest documentary would be the fourth sexuality. I have used this documentary because it is focused on a small group of small target audience preferably the people that believe there is a forth sexuality which is called asexuality. This documentary was not shown on television it's is on YouTube and spread of irony preferably because the documentary itself was based for a niche group.

Another example of a special interest documentary would be the secret life of cats I have used this documentary because it focuses on a certain target audience; cat lovers. I would assume that the public that didn't like cats wouldn't fund the programme interested I wouldn't watch it therefore I believe that it was targeted purely for people who own cats like them which would be a very niche group. The programme did not have a follow-up although there was a similar documentary called the secret life of dogs which was a somewhat spin-off programme.

My last example of a special interest documentary would be "Gaming Addiction". This is a British documentary that was only shown on YouTube because the broadcasters aims to keep the viewers quite small. It is about young adults addicted to consoles, video and computer games. This documentary would be specifically aimed at gamer's which would make the target group quite small. These types of documentaries do not have a follow up and isn't very long. This documentary could effect the audience by either influencing or repelling them away from gaming, due to the fact that some games are educational but they affect the individual's social lives and could have a bad influence upon them, e.g with games such as Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Left for Dead and Dead Rising.

Make Over Show

This is a reality TV genre where a certain member of the public has thier life transferred in order to make them happier. This usually consists of a famous presenter with experts such as plumbers carpenters and furnishers getting involved in creating and recreating something that has been tragically in their lives, for example 60 minute makeover

An example of a make over show would be "60 Minute Makeover". This is a British daytime home interior design television programme that is broadcast on ITV in the UK. In 2013, Peter Andre became the main presenter for the show.

Another example of a makeover show would be "How Clean Is Your House?". This is a British lifestyle television programme in which expert cleaners Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie pay a visit to filthy homes and then cleaned them to perfection.

My last example of a makeover show would be "The Hoarder Next Door". This is a British documentary series about compulsive hoarding. Shown on Channel 4 it features a psychotherapist Stelios Kiosses who helps the extreme hoarders. In this documentary, we are introduced to the hoarders, are given a tour off their home and are shown how they live their lives. The episode commonly consists of cleaners arranging piles full of the hoarders possessions which are then either stored or thrown away, this usually effects the hoarder quite significantly which gives us an insight as to why they hoard. The psychotherapist asks and reaches into them into why they hoard and store their possessions, the reason is commonly due to a loss of a loved one or deprived childhood attention which leave the audience feeling sympathy towards the person.

Discussion Show

A discussion show contains a panel with members varying between genders and race given that opinion and discussing a certain topic or event. Depending on the show it will usually have either a serious or informal and relaxed tone. It's nothing like an interview chapeau because an interview is purely Q&A whereas the guests and the panel both discuss equally what they think about what is happening.

An example of a discussion show would be "Loose Women". This programme is a female targeted daily programme aired on ITV1 that casts 4 woman discussing local news between them with a special guest appearance. In this clip, reality TV star Joey Essex was a special guest.

Another example of a discussion programme would be "Big Brother's Bit on the Side". This is a spin off panel show hosted by Rylan Clark which is specifically to discuss the events of Big Brother. This show is quite informal because the audience is commonly involved with the show giving out their opinions on the topic and the hosts seem to have an entertaining bond with the guests.

My last example of a makeover show would be "The Wright Stuff". This is a British television programme in which the host Matthew Wright discusses the paper's topics with guests from different careers. The presenter in the wright stuff seems very formal and at times quite patronising towards the audience and callers that phone up to give out their opinion about the certain topic they are discussing.  The topics that are spoken about on the show usually are of the latest news that has been recently broadcasted in the papers and on television, speaking of recent events usually increases the audiences attention so they can give out their opinion to the show. Although the wright stuff occasionally has an odd bit of banter -if you will -it stays very formal and quite serious throughout because the majority of the news spoken about is either ridiculous or serious topics. Matthew Wright the host of the show portrays a sort of patronising character which is good and bad in some ways; it's good because he has a good judgement and opinion about what they're talking about but it is also bad because he can affect or aggravate certain people especially the audience and the public with his remarks.

 Review Show

A review show is a television programme which has the pure purpose of reviewing products. This often involves the presenter hosting a product test to analyse the item that is being reviewed.

An example of a review show would be "Will It Blend?". This is an frequent online clip that shows the blender Blendtec testing the items durability as they are ripped apart by the blender's creator Tom Dickson. The whole purpose of the show is to show how powerful the blender itself it as some clips including an iPhone and iPad being turned to ash and bunch of lighters exploding.

An example of a review show would be "The Gadget Show". The show reviews the latest gadgets and broadcasts the latest technology news. It is aimed at giving the consumer an insight into the gadget world and also aims to give enough information for the more "geeky" target audience, but still making it accessible to the more casual viewer.

My last example of a review show would be "Top Gear". In this episode there is a product testing of what the effects would be if I car was to be hit by a train. This clip is quite interesting as it goes into depth and detail and it also shows you as it happens. I think that this was quite a good episode to air as he has meaning to it and you could say it kind of gives out a message to the public. We usually see adverts of children, adults, cars and motorbikes crossing train lines without realising they are on them so this could bring awareness of the devastation and destruction it could all cause. Top gear product tests on cars mainly that I think this is a little bit different because it's not everyday you get to see a car being almost crushed by a train on television. This would engage the audience and public and would will draw them into watching it because they would want to see what would happen to the car and the persons inside of it which is interesting.

Chat Show

A chat show is a studio based programme where people appear guest starring to discuss their everyday lives and try to resolve their problems. The present are commonly has a Judgmental and opinionated character in order for them to engage the audience. Most chat shows our weekly and consistent because the audience mostly enjoys watching it because it is real life.

An example of a chat show would be "Jeremy Kyle Show". The Jeremy Kyle Show is a tabloid talk show which has been broadcasting on ITV since 2005. The show is purely based on confrontations with the guests attempting to find out the truth or resolve issues with others. These issues are often related to: family relationships; romantic relationships; sex; drugs; and alcohol, among other issues.

An example of a chat show would be "Jerry Springer Show". This is an American syndicated talk show hosted by Jerry Springer, a former politician. The programme is similar to Jeremy Kyle but there is more entertainment and a significant amount of voilence on the show. The events of the guest usually result to them fighting with each other and not leaving pleased.

.My last example of a chat show would be "Steve Wilkos". This is also an American syndicated talk show - like Jerry Springer- hosted by Steve Wilkos, who was a former marine and member of security on The Jerry Springer Show. This programme is quite entertaining but is also quite disturbing, depending on storyline. The story is usually very between a simple lie detector test to sexual molestation or occasionally even murder. The show is quite informal because the presenter Steve Wilkos isn't dressed smart, he's dressed very casual usually in the jeans and T-shirt  and the set is quite simple having one or two chairs, a carpet floor and a window background. Steve Wilkos himself isn't even a formal presenter because he shows a lot of emotion and he expresses how we feels, whether it's right or wrong. This would draw the audience and bring more viewers in because they would want to know what he would do and how he would react to the guests if they would be rude or aggressive or show threatening behaviour towards another person on the stage. In this particular episode we see a young male who looks quite immature and childish but is a woman abuser and beater. As Steve reads out the description that the production team have given about him you can sense  the anger and disgust in his voice, evidently stating that Steve is a judgmental character which often increases the audiences attention to the show.

Magazine Show

A magazine show is a or close to live broadcast where the issues and news that they speak about is mostly up-to-date and recent news, The topic I talk about usually very specific and is all connected to each other.

An example of a magazine show would be "The One Show". This programme is a topical magazine-style daily television programme broadcast live on BBC One on weekdays. In this clip there is a two guest appearances of the famous Game of Thrones, they simply talk about life on set and questions related to the show itself.

Another example of a would be "This Morning". This programme is also a magazine-style daily television programme is broadcast live from a London studio. In this clip there is a guest appearances from the television programme "Mad Fat Diary".

My last example of a magazine show would be BBC Breakfast interviewing Kevin Hart about his new film Ride Along. This interview could give an opinion about the film even though it would be a biased remark, but Kevin Hart- being a comedian - could make the show seem interesting and entertaining for the viewers home and not just the presenters.  This specific clip features a preview to the film which you get the audience intrigued and want to know little more about it,  by keeping the view was intrigued then they will most likely state-owned which increases popularity which is a pro for the broadcasting companies. I personally think that the audience will be affected quite well by this specific topic because there is a comedian speaking about I feel he's made which is a comedy and the reviews for the film quite high therefore studentship want to know what happens.
