This news report was dedicated to the case of missing Madeleine McCann. In this story, the main topic was about the police re-opening the case of the missing toddler due to more development in the investigation of her disappearance. The field reporter is a middle aged white woman who is dressed formally and is quite involved in the story as she is reporting the recent events to the studio and is being a voice over throughout the story. The news reporters location was in the Lisbon where she was kidnapped and the footage is live. Her accent shows she is from Britain and sounds very educated because she is well spoken, she also has a strict tone of voice indicated that the story is quite important. There was no vox-poppers but one interviewee during this story whom was a member of the home secretary, her persona showed her to be an important and well educated woman. She stated -- Lastly, there was actuality footage shown throughout the report, it was pre-recorded home footage of Madeleine McCann months before the holiday to Praia da Luz.
This is an American news reports based on a video that went viral of 3 men harassing and brutally attacking a fellow commuter on the train. The field reporters was a middle aged white man and in this news story, they were dressed quite formally in the report to show that he was educated and serious in this investigation. The footage was live and pre-recorded in this story: the live footage was shown of the reporter outside either the scene of the crime or a hospital where the victim was taken too, the pre-recorded footage shows the interviewer showing the video to pedestrians and listening to their thoughts of the situation. It is clear based on their accents that it was filmed and broadcast in Northern America and the report states it was in New York. The presenter's mode of address was quite serious as he was trying to imply that the case is quite important. The graphics shown in this news report was quite minor, the common graphic was of the news reporters names appearing on the screen, showing where they are located and what news company they are with. In this story, there was vox poppers begin shown the video and asked about the opinion, most people said they were shocked and horrified by the event and that they need to be caught. The actuality footage was the main part of the story because the public had to see what exactly happened. Seeing as the footage wasn't recorded by the news channel and by a commuter, they list it as "Amateur Video" to show that it isn't their own recording and they can't be responsible for the poor quality of whatever is shown. At the end of the report, the reporter signs out listing his name, location and company name.
Special Interest Documentary This is traditional type of documentary which a would have a small target audience. They are usually a one off story that isn't followed up the next week and if it is, the topic would be completely different. A special interest documentary tends to hold appeal to a specific age group, interest or culture.
An example of special interest documentary would be the fourth sexuality. I have used this documentary because it is focused on a small group of small target audience preferably the people that believe there is a forth sexuality which is called asexuality. This documentary was not shown on television it's is on YouTube and spread of irony preferably because the documentary itself was based for a niche group.
Another example of a special interest documentary would be the secret life of cats I have used this documentary because it focuses on a certain target audience; cat lovers. I would assume that the public that didn't like cats wouldn't fund the programme interested I wouldn't watch it therefore I believe that it was targeted purely for people who own cats like them which would be a very niche group. The programme did not have a follow-up although there was a similar documentary called the secret life of dogs which was a somewhat spin-off programme.
My last example of a special interest documentary would be "Gaming Addiction". This is a British documentary that was only shown on YouTube because the broadcasters aims to keep the viewers quite small. It is about young adults addicted to consoles, video and computer games. This documentary would be specifically aimed at gamer's which would make the target group quite small. These types of documentaries do not have a follow up and isn't very long. This documentary could effect the audience by either influencing or repelling them away from gaming, due to the fact that some games are educational but they affect the individual's social lives and could have a bad influence upon them, e.g with games such as Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Left for Dead and Dead Rising.
Make Over Show This is a reality TV genre where a certain member of the public has thier life transferred in order to make them happier. This usually consists of a famous presenter with experts such as plumbers carpenters and furnishers getting involved in creating and recreating something that has been tragically in their lives, for example 60 minute makeover
An example of a make over show would be "60 Minute Makeover". This is a British daytime home interior design television programme that is broadcast on ITV in the UK. In 2013, Peter Andre became the main presenter for the show.
Another example of a makeover show would be "How Clean Is Your House?". This is a British lifestyle television programme in which expert cleaners Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie pay a visit to filthy homes and then cleaned them to perfection.
My last example of a makeover show would be "The Hoarder Next Door". This is a British documentary series about compulsive hoarding. Shown on Channel 4 it features a psychotherapist Stelios Kiosses who helps the extreme hoarders. In this documentary, we are introduced to the hoarders, are given a tour off their home and are shown how they live their lives. The episode commonly consists of cleaners arranging piles full of the hoarders possessions which are then either stored or thrown away, this usually effects the hoarder quite significantly which gives us an insight as to why they hoard. The psychotherapist asks and reaches into them into why they hoard and store their possessions, the reason is commonly due to a loss of a loved one or deprived childhood attention which leave the audience feeling sympathy towards the person.
Discussion Show
A discussion show contains a panel with members varying between genders and race given that opinion and discussing a certain topic or event. Depending on the show it will usually have either a serious or informal and relaxed tone. It's nothing like an interview chapeau because an interview is purely Q&A whereas the guests and the panel both discuss equally what they think about what is happening.
An example of a discussion show would be "Loose Women". This programme is a female targeted daily programme aired on ITV1 that casts 4 woman discussing local news between them with a special guest appearance. In this clip, reality TV star Joey Essex was a special guest.
Another example of a discussion programme would be "Big Brother's Bit on the Side". This is a spin off panel show hosted by Rylan Clark which is specifically to discuss the events of Big Brother. This show is quite informal because the audience is commonly involved with the show giving out their opinions on the topic and the hosts seem to have an entertaining bond with the guests.
My last example of a makeover show would be "The Wright Stuff". This is a British television programme in which the host Matthew Wright discusses the paper's topics with guests from different careers. The presenter in the wright stuff seems very formal and at times quite patronising towards the audience and callers that phone up to give out their opinion about the certain topic they are discussing. The topics that are spoken about on the show usually are of the latest news that has been recently broadcasted in the papers and on television, speaking of recent events usually increases the audiences attention so they can give out their opinion to the show. Although the wright stuff occasionally has an odd bit of banter -if you will -it stays very formal and quite serious throughout because the majority of the news spoken about is either ridiculous or serious topics. Matthew Wright the host of the show portrays a sort of patronising character which is good and bad in some ways; it's good because he has a good judgement and opinion about what they're talking about but it is also bad because he can affect or aggravate certain people especially the audience and the public with his remarks.
Review Show
A review show is a television programme which has the pure purpose of reviewing products. This often involves the presenter hosting a product test to analyse the item that is being reviewed.
An example of a review show would be "Will It Blend?". This is an frequent online clip that shows the blender Blendtec testing the items durability as they are ripped apart by the blender's creator Tom Dickson. The whole purpose of the show is to show how powerful the blender itself it as some clips including an iPhone and iPad being turned to ash and bunch of lighters exploding.
An example of a review show would be "The Gadget Show". The show reviews the latest gadgets and broadcasts the latest technology news. It is aimed at giving the consumer an insight into the gadget world and also aims to give enough information for the more "geeky" target audience, but still making it accessible to the more casual viewer.
My last example of a review show would be "Top Gear". In this episode there is a product testing of what the effects would be if I car was to be hit by a train. This clip is quite interesting as it goes into depth and detail and it also shows you as it happens. I think that this was quite a good episode to air as he has meaning to it and you could say it kind of gives out a message to the public. We usually see adverts of children, adults, cars and motorbikes crossing train lines without realising they are on them so this could bring awareness of the devastation and destruction it could all cause. Top gear product tests on cars mainly that I think this is a little bit different because it's not everyday you get to see a car being almost crushed by a train on television. This would engage the audience and public and would will draw them into watching it because they would want to see what would happen to the car and the persons inside of it which is interesting.
Chat Show
A chat show is a studio based programme where people appear guest starring to discuss their everyday lives and try to resolve their problems. The present are commonly has a Judgmental and opinionated character in order for them to engage the audience. Most chat shows our weekly and consistent because the audience mostly enjoys watching it because it is real life.
An example of a chat show would be "Jeremy Kyle Show". The Jeremy Kyle Show is a tabloid talk show which has been broadcasting on ITV since 2005. The show is purely based on confrontations with the guests attempting to find out the truth or resolve issues with others. These issues are often related to: family relationships; romantic relationships; sex; drugs; and alcohol, among other issues.
An example of a chat show would be "Jerry Springer Show". This is an American syndicated talk show hosted by Jerry Springer, a former politician. The programme is similar to Jeremy Kyle but there is more entertainment and a significant amount of voilence on the show. The events of the guest usually result to them fighting with each other and not leaving pleased.
.My last example of a chat show would be "Steve Wilkos". This is also an American syndicated talk show - like Jerry Springer- hosted by Steve Wilkos, who was a former marine and member of security on The Jerry Springer Show. This programme is quite entertaining but is also quite disturbing, depending on storyline. The story is usually very between a simple lie detector test to sexual molestation or occasionally even murder. The show is quite informal because the presenter Steve Wilkos isn't dressed smart, he's dressed very casual usually in the jeans and T-shirt and the set is quite simple having one or two chairs, a carpet floor and a window background. Steve Wilkos himself isn't even a formal presenter because he shows a lot of emotion and he expresses how we feels, whether it's right or wrong. This would draw the audience and bring more viewers in because they would want to know what he would do and how he would react to the guests if they would be rude or aggressive or show threatening behaviour towards another person on the stage. In this particular episode we see a young male who looks quite immature and childish but is a woman abuser and beater. As Steve reads out the description that the production team have given about him you can sense the anger and disgust in his voice, evidently stating that Steve is a judgmental character which often increases the audiences attention to the show.
Magazine Show
A magazine show is a or close to live broadcast where the issues and news that they speak about is mostly up-to-date and recent news, The topic I talk about usually very specific and is all connected to each other.
An example of a magazine show would be "The One Show". This programme is a topical magazine-style daily television programme broadcast live on BBC One on weekdays. In this clip there is a two guest appearances of the famous Game of Thrones, they simply talk about life on set and questions related to the show itself.
Another example of a would be "This Morning". This programme is also a magazine-style daily television programme is broadcast live from a London studio. In this clip there is a guest appearances from the television programme "Mad Fat Diary".
My last example of a magazine show would be BBC Breakfast interviewing Kevin Hart about his new film Ride Along. This interview could give an opinion about the film even though it would be a biased remark, but Kevin Hart- being a comedian - could make the show seem interesting and entertaining for the viewers home and not just the presenters. This specific clip features a preview to the film which you get the audience intrigued and want to know little more about it, by keeping the view was intrigued then they will most likely state-owned which increases popularity which is a pro for the broadcasting companies. I personally think that the audience will be affected quite well by this specific topic because there is a comedian speaking about I feel he's made which is a comedy and the reviews for the film quite high therefore studentship want to know what happens.
A docusoap is a television documentary series in which the lives of the people filmed are presented as entertainment or drama. A few examples of a docudrama would be "Educating Essex", "Airline" and "The Undateables". "Educating Essex" is a fly on the wall docusoap in which we are shown the daily lives of students at a school in Essex. The audience are shown familiar faces in this show because it focuses on particular students and how they are in school. "The Undateables" is a docusoap television programmes which gives us an insight to the love lives of people with disabilities. This programme doesn't always focus on the same people but they have a reunion of the favourite cast of the show to give the audience a catch up of their love lives. The docusoap I will analayse will be "Airline". Airline is a reality television programmed produced in the United Kingdom that showcases the daily happenings of passengers, ground workers and on-board staff every week around the airports across the UK.
This docusoap focuses on the daily events of what the check in staff and passengers go through every day. In this episode, we see a family with their daughter and her friend to fly to Belfast. The airline refuses to allow the 14 year old daughter to be responsible for the 13 year old friend, which causes havoc between the parents. Another event which occurred in this episode caused a chaotic argument between the a middle-aged man who turned up late to his flight and had missed it. He got verbally abusive and angry with check-in staff when they refused to give his money back, the duty manager was called to contain the situation but in face made it much worse which resulted in the police being called.
Docudrama
A docudrama can vary from a feature film or television programme which focuses on the historical events in the past using actors, evidence and archive footage. A few examples of a docudrama would be "Monster" and "Murdered by my boyfriend"."Monster" is a true story film which is based on America's female serial killer Aileen Wournos who killed the men that wanted to have sex with her She developed a strong hate for men after being raped and almost killed her because she was a hooker. "Murdered by my boyfriend" is a reconstruction about a young British girl who was in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend and father to her child. This story caused an epidemic around Britain making domestic abuse a high alert topic for the police. The example I will use would be "Inside the twin towers". This is a recreation type documentary with CGI to create the cause of the catastrophic event. It focuses and retells the story from the inside of the World Trade Center to show the public what was happening fro the inside.
This docudrama retells the story of the horrific and historical event that happened in 2001 when the twin towers were attacked by an Islamic terrorist group called Al- Qaeda. The documentary uses actors and CGI (32:09) to reconstruct the events told by the survivors being interviewed. I personally found this docudrama very heart-wrenching and interesting because most evidence and reports were shown from what was witnessed fromoutside of the buildings, so it was different hearing about what the survivors felt and encountered. The scene that effected me the most where a survivor was naming the people he knew on the floor that had died. He started to weld up tears and as he went silent, soft music played in the background to emphasis the effect of their loss to him (1:22:20). The September is one of the most disturbing, horrific events in American history which had the world talking about it for years. This docudrama won an award and was nominated for an Emmy due to the editing and how it was overall an outstanding documentary due to the remarkable archive footage used especially between (1:16:45-1:17:59). Reality TV A reality television show is a genre of style that documents unscripted situations and actual occurrences which commonly features a previously the same cast. A few examples of reality television would be "Gogglebox", "Big Brother" and "I'm a celebrity. Get me out of here!". "Gogglebox" is a fly on the wall show which features frequent British couples, families and friends sitting in their living rooms watching weekly British television shows. The show won a BAFTA award in 2014. "I'm a Celeb" is a reality show in which celebrities are sent to a jungle in Australia where they are given tasks to complete in order to survive and get food. The celebs are then voted out of the jungle by the public until the new King or Queen of the jungle is announced each year. The example of a reality show I will analayse would be Big Brother. I have used Season 7 which specifically stars an iconic young woman called Nikki Grahame which is now presently known for her childish temper tantrums in the house.
Infotainment
A infotainment is a television documentary series based to give out information and entertainment to the public.A few examples of an eductional show would be "Educating Joey Essex", "An Idiot Abroad" and "Jackass". "An idiot abroad" is a British travel documentary television series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and starring Karl Pilkington. The continuous purpose of both the television series and the books is that Pilkington has no interest in global travel, so Merchant and Gervais make him travel while they stay in the United Kingdom and monitor him. "Jackass" is an American entertainment/information show in which a group of men partake in ridiculously dangerous and vile pranks and challenges for a joke and to one-up one another. "Educating Joey Essex" is a television series in which the iconical stupid Joey Essex brushes up on his facts learning about the ways of the world due to his ditsy and un-educated background. The documentary I have chosen to analyse would be "Educating Joey Essex".
Educating Joey Essex is classed as an infotainment television documentary due to his uneducated lifestyle and behaviour. This programme was created in order to educate him becuase he admits he isn't very smart but this was following the death of his mother at an early age causing him to focus a lot less on his education. Cherry embarks on a round trip around the world to understand the basic things of life that a teenager would know, e.g what a continent was and where Africa was located. I personally think that this documentary is the best example of this genre because Joey Essex is hilarious as a person. Not just that but we also learn with him we learn certain things that he is learning aswelll.
Educational TV A educational television show is a genre purely based to educate the public and to draw the audience in to watching the television show. A few examples of an educational television show would be "Mermaid: The body found" and "The Unsinkable Titanic". "Mermaid: The body found" is a true documentary in which four scientists tell the story of how they fought against goverment authority in order to analyse and identify a unknown sea creature. "The Unsinkable Titanic" is a purely factual documentary in which the story of the Titanic is retold along with how she sank. The documentary I have chosen to analyse would be "Mermaids: The body found".
This educational show gives a narrative story about how a team of scientists uncovered a phenomenon. It was a science docufiction film that aired in 2012, on Animal Planet. It tells the story of a scientific team's investigative efforts to uncover the source behind mysterious underwater recordings and an unidentified marine carcass. In 2004, a marine biologist named Dr Brian McCormick came across a recording of mysterious underwater sounds(16:43), he launched a scientific investigation to uncover the creature responsible. In search of conclusive proof, he and his research team are called out to an unusual whale stranding in South Africa. This is where they find the part digested remains of an animal that none of them could identify. As each of its body parts is autopsied, they provide new pieces of the puzzle. As the evidence eventually pieces together, Dr McCormick is comes to an astonishing conclusion that this new marine creature is related to humans (59:08). This two-hour special combines beautiful CGI animation, real natural history and a conspiracy theory. (57:50)
Wildlife Documentary. A wildlife documentary is a series in which a narrator explains the evidence and facts of a specific topic on an animal or plant. A few examples of a wildlife documentary would be "The Wonderful World of Cats", "Africa's most dangerous snake" and "Giant Megaladon". "The Wonderful World of Cats" is based on portraying the lives of domesticated and wild cats. This show explains to the public how the stubborn, fierce and killing animal evolved into such a loyal, home companion. "Africa's most dangerous snake" is a documentary that is targeted to uncover the country's deadliest snake. The show speaks of a specific snake and enlightens us into how it is so deadly and feared. The documentary I have chosen to analyse would be "Giant Megaladon".
This wildlife documentary focuses on the evolution of sharks which is narrated by Tim Birkett. This wildlife show unearths the anatomy of the famous megaladon, which was the biggest shark in the world. We, the audience are given an insight into the underwater lives of shark from past time to present time. In the documentary, there are experts and archaeologists that give us detailed information and facts about the sharks that used to lived in the seas millions of years ago. In (4:58), we are taught that a shark’s anatomy is mainly cartilage which allows sharks to be so flexible and allows the skeleton to be shown. This is told by a member of the marine museum. This documentary consists of archive footage and CGI animation to add more intensity and profession to the documentary itself.
In this documentary, we witness the whole process of the traditional Kyrgyzstan proposal. The presenter and cameraman in this documentary film the whole event to show a young groom planning on kidnapping his friend whom he wished to marry. The presenter poses and offers his services as a wedding photographer in order to film the whole event. He comes across as a quite laid back and respectful person in the show but shows professional. After 'the grab', he seemed to look quite lost and awkward (15:31) but that was most likely because so much was happening during that time and he didn't know what to do. He also doesn't really look directly into the camera, mostly at his surroundings and at the cameraman. The music in this documentary is quiet and steady throughout the documentary which builds up during intense scenes i.e just before the groom and men kidnapped her (12:11-12:32) and also when she was crying (14.02-14.36). It expresses the atmosphere and the person's emotions. The voice over in this doc is consitent as the presenter explains before hand what is about to happen to add intensity to it. The intro in this documentary starts off with a game of polo which is played with a dead goat (0:00-0:46) and then the presenter of the show is shown on a horse explaining what is happening and how it is a tradition. The outro of the show is quite cliche but professional as it shows the two families together posing for pictures with the presenter giving his final opinion on the kidnapping tradition. (32:31-32:42)
There was more of the original footage then there was of any archive footage. The original footage was consistent, making the documentary where as only section of archive footage was shown at different times of a film made in Kyrgyzstan about a bride being kidnapped. This then led to an interview because the producer of the documentary and the producer of the film (5:15-6:24). I believe the bride kidnapping movie left a big impact on the families in Kyrgyzstan because the kidnappee's name in the film was almost forbidden to use in hoping their daughters with the same name wouldn't be targetted to be taken. We are shown several interviews in this documentary, mostly between families and friends of the kidnapper &his bride and also the bride &groom themselves. Their role in this, in my opinion, is quite bias because overall, they agree with the tradition and do not speak ill of it because they have to follow it themselves. It keeps us interested because we get to see mostly everything. We were shown the kidnap (9:06-16:05) and wedding ceremony (27:11-27:50)) take place, indicating that it isn't fake or improvised. We are also shown the emotions and feelings of the persons involved like the bride themselves who seem distraught. Also, hearing how the groom felt about the whole tradition made this documentary unbiased because we were left to judge and side with whomever we wanted to after seeing it from two different perspectives. The Cannibal Warlords of Liberia.
